Dearest Noah and Dylan,
I had such a great time visiting you both in the hospital last night with Uncle Joe. It was our first visit in two weeks since I had a bad cold. The month of September is always pretty exhausting starting back up at school but I made it! And already you've both been upgraded to cribs at Lawrence General!
The nurse on duty reminded us of our grandmother. She was very kind but sort of stern-looking, too. I was amazed at how patient she was with your dad while he tried to fee you both. Dylan, you were giving us a heart attack because you kept stopping breathing since you were gulping the milk down too fast so we had to sit and watch while your dad held you upright and stared back and forth between you and the monitor. The nurse kept saying "He's coming back." I didn't realize you had gone anywhere but I didn't like the sound of it, plus it looked like your dad wasn't holding your head right. I couldn't stand not doing anything so I kept going over and holding your head at a better angle while your dad fumbled nervously trying to get the nipple back in your mouth when you were finally ready. The best part though was when finally the ordeal was done and I got to hold you until your next feeding as it turned out for 2 1/2 hours! You had had your first bath earlier in the day with your mom so you hadn't quite warmed back up completely. I got your body temp. back up to over 99 degrees. You didn't cry once but you tooted a few times. I could feel it through your diaper.
Uncle Joe got to hold Noah. You slept most of the time while we were there also until the 7:00 feeding. You handled the milk much better and drank it right down! The nursee even gave you some extra since you had been ravenous the lst time.
Whle we were sitting there, Dad told us how your Nana has not been to see you since Labor Day. Your aunt gave birth to her baby and Nana has probably been busy helping her out , but for some reason she is also mad at your mom and nobody seems to know why.
I told your dad that I'm hoping to go over and help out when your mom goes back to work. Dad will have to be in charge on Fridays and Saturday and one other day during the week but not until after Christmas. In the meantime, we will both be over to visit as often as we can and as much as Mom and Dad want. Maybe we can also take your brother Nick with us on a hike since they will be so busy and not have nearly as much time for him. We had fun the day he came over here except I think I got my cold from him. We took him home with us from Boston so your mom and dad could spend more time in the hospital. We went for a walk with Ruby and Jack at Mosely Pines. Poor Nick is not allowed to see you guys at Lawrence General since some flu season started and anyone under the age of 15 I think is forbidden in NICU. Ken said Nick was out in the hall sobbing looking in the window at you both! It was his first time tgoing to see you at Larence General, too, and wehn he got there, they had just close down the ward.
I can't wait to hold either one of you again- your second cousin Veronica wants to go too. I had a weird thought wheile holding Dylan and feeling how warm and snug he was-I thought back to when my mom was in the hospital and I was putting my head on her stomache, trying to preserve the warmth of her body in my memory forever, before we had to take her off the life support. It seemed like that same energy was coming right through the baby blanket into my arms and chest.
